San Diego Trolley Tour
After spending the morning in Colonaro came back over the harbor bridge back into the city.

San Diego city from the South

Next stop, Balboa Park, site of the 1916 Worlds Fair.

Balboa is a large Park, on a hill overlooking the City.

The Buildings are in a Spanish style, to me more reminiscent of Tuscany.

A total departure from the rest of the city.

Although some areas are more Spanish Mission.

Even Mexican.

From there to Little Italy, not very scenic but a nice place to eat

The Trolley Tour then went to 'Old Town' which is Mexican/ Western area, site of the original San Diego town.

Then on  to the Waterfront.

More about this area later.

In the meantime the beautiful Art deco City Hall

City Hall San Diego

Next Stop Seaport Village, adjacnet to a beautiful marina and what is left of the fishing port

Seaport Village San Diego
Big Convention Centre down here and then between there and the City the upscale hotels.

Once again on this trip with sundown just after 5 pm lack of daylight came into play.

Auckland, Los Angles to San Diego

Auckland to Los Angles to San Diego

22 November 2014.

One of those long days where you travel back in time.

A Friday (I think), went to work and the trip started at a Bus Stop in Queen Street Auckland, between Wyndham and Durham. I caught the Airport Express Bus out to Mangere and onto the late flight by Air New Zealand flight to Los Angles.

Motorway into Central LA

Now having a very contrary view on life I see that positive things that others see as negative. The entertainment system broke down, so people had to fill the time by talking to each other. I do feel sorry for the crew, when people are watching bloody movies they are so rude, they treat the cabin staff as if they are annoying intrusions because they want to know if they want something to eat or drink.

I flew Premium Economy, which is neither Business or Economy.

Struck up a conversation with a businessman from US, I gave him my idea for a successful Presidential Campaign by simply promising three weeks annual leave a year. Like many Americans this had been his first trip overseas and wanted more Americans to travel as it broadened their horizons.

I caught a bus from LAX to Union Station for the train down to San Diego.

First Class Lounge Union Station LA

I bought a first Class Ticket which allowed me to change my train to an earlier one and use the First Class Lounge above. The cost difference was not significant. The Public facilities are pretty rough at Union Station. The lounge was quaint, perhaps a little old fashion but it was clean and included light snacks.

The trains are far larger than I have seen before, full double story cars, pretty busy most seats were taken, although not the one next to me.

Surfliner First Class Cabin

The trip down to San Diego took about 2 hours, glad I took the earlier train as it left about 3.30 and as it was dark just after 5 I got to see the view before it was dark.  Initially the train travels through Industrial land.

Unknown River in LA

The line goes to Anaheim and the station was actually behind Baseball Stadium, then through residential suburbs. But, this is still centre of the movie industry, the photo below was taken from the train widow, the pretended to kiss, but the woman was actually turned away behind the guys head???

Mystery Couple
Then we were out on the coast and we followed the coast.

Southern Californian Beach from Carpark

Miles and miles of beautiful beaches.

Beach from Surfliner

Past a pier which are common in California.

Then on to the terminus at Santa Fe Station at San Diego.

Then finally to 500 West Hotel
